A tattoo is no longer the permanent body fixture that it used to be. Thanks to modern technology and research, you now have several option to have that unwanted tattoo removed.

Many people with tattoos realize after some time that they no longer want their tattoo.

It could be that you have outgrown your tattoo or that your physic has changed somewhat – or it could be that you have simply grown up and came to the realization that the tattoo was an impulsive action. Tattoo removal to the rescue!

In-Home Tattoo Fading Creams

Wrecking Balm, Tat B Gone and other tattoo fading creams claim to fade your tattoo within a few weeks. If you have a small light tattoo it is definitely worth trying as it is non invasive and inexpensive. Make sure you follow the instructions and stop using these creams at the first sign of skin irritation. There are mixed responses on the effectiveness of fading creams. There are some that claim total satisfaction with the outcome.

Surgical Tattoo Removal

Depending on the area and size of your tattoo – this may be the most effective way of tattoo removal. A surgeon will physically cut out your tattoo and cover the area either by skin graft or simply by stitching the wound together – if the size would allow this. Ouch – but effective! The negative is that a medical procedure could leave the skin damaged and scarring. In my opinion you should consider surgical tattoo removal in extreme cases only and definitely as a last resort.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Treatment through high-powered laser is the most popular method as it is bloodless and low risk. The downside of this is that multiple treatments may be required, often depending on the number of colors in your tattoo. Laser tattoo removal targets the ink under your skin with pulses that break the ink into microscopic fragments. After a laser procedure you may not actually see a difference as your body’s immune system takes time to expel these fragmented ink drops over time. You may require several laser treatments to get rid of your tattoo which could be costly. The process is also quite painful but a numbing cream will make it bearable. If you can afford it, this is probably the most effective way of removing that unwanted tattoo.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

This is a similar process to Laser Tattoo Removal but relying on intense light pulses rather than laser. To get technical, the major difference between laser and and intense pulsed light is that laser operates at a fixed wavelength whereas IPL produces a spectrum of light, claiming to make the process of breaking up the ink more effective.

Tattoo Removal through Dermabrasion

This boils down to a process where a surgeon will sand or scrape the area of your tattoo in order to remove all the colored layers of skin. Some of the ink will be released during the process and can be absorbed by a blotting cloth. A skilled person will have to study the skin area of your tattoo in order to determine if Dermabrasion is an option.
